July 26, 2012 Update: Blason is now open exclusively for events, with cuisine under chef Pierre Landry. But Casa de Arte e Cultura Julieta de Serpa has a new and just as wonderful restaurant: Paris, opened in July 2012.

The design, furniture and table settings at Blason speak of the love for art and beauty which permeates all of Casa de Arte e Cultura Julieta de Serpa. Mirrors and Baccarat crystal chandeliers and appliqués decorate the restaurant located inside this privately owned cultural center in Flamengo. Blason is one of the places in Rio de Janeiro where casual routines take a full step back for a very elegant - and romantic - dining experience.

Chef Elizeu Ferreira creates the dishes which bring essential ingredients of Brazilian culinary into a decidedly classic French mode.

Appetizers include salmon tartare with fresh heart-of-palm and toast in olive oil and vol au vent au Gruyère. For the entrée, lamb carré in a spice sauce with aracacha mousseline, magret de canard in a Port sauce with Grana Padano risotto, and coconut-crusted grilled salmon with Sicilian lemon risotto are some the options.

Chef Ferreira also creates new menus for lunch and dinner specials (R$55 and $75 respectively), with two options for the appetizer, entrée and dessert. Examples of recently featured dishes are a green leaf and endive mesclun with Roquefort, walnuts and basil vinaigrette, entrecôte with puréed white beans and glazed pears in ginger sauce and fruit with Grand Marnier cream.

From the wine cellar, with nearly 2,000 bottles, come wines from Europe and South America. João Souza is the sommelier who meticulously chose the 200 or so labels which harmonize with chef Ferreira's cuisine.

Chef pâtissier Maurício Ferreira creates desserts for a perfect ending, such as biscuits pralinés with lemon cream and mint parfait with bitter chocolate sauce.
