Atlantis, the restaurant by the swimming pools of the Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Copacabana, encapsulates many a traveler's Rio de Janeiro daydreams. Great for a date, a night with friends, lunch with the kids, or a crucial business meeting, Atlantis has food by chef Roland Villard and chef pâtissier Dominique Guerin as well as some of wonderful views of Copacabana. The panorama seen from the veranda is particularly stunning; you can see Sugarloaf Mountain and, at night, the full string of lights bordering the beach.

Less formal than Le Pré Catelan, the hotel's three-star restaurant, Atlantis is where guests at Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Copacabana have most of their meals. But the restaurant with 80 seats is also open to non-guests all week long.

Breakfast (6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.) features fine breads, brioches, and waffles made at the hotel's own pâtisserie.

From Monday to Friday, you can enjoy "Buffet Gourmet", with salads, tapas, cold and hot dishes by chef Roland Villard and desserts (included in the price) by chef Guerin.

For lunch or dinner, choose from chef Villard's menu (changed often) or order a la carte from an array of salads, pasta dishes, risotti, and chef Guerin's jewel-like desserts. Alongside exquisite dishes such as shrimp risotto made with shellfish stock and grilled almonds or beef tournedos served with a red wine sauce and gratin potato with goat cheese, parents will find several tot-friendly options - pizza and spaghetti, for example - with a chef's touch.

Atlantis is also the perfect place for an introduction to the Saturday feijoada, a quintessential Brazil travel experience. Superlatively dubbed "Feijoadíssima", the Atlantis version of the dish is served with live samba and chorinho as of 12:30 p.m.

On Sunday, there's bruch with live music and a tasting of chef Villard's creations.

The restaurant's bar, located by the round pool and with scenic views of the shoreline, is one of the best spots in Rio de Janeiro for a romantic night on the town.
