Going uphill, to the right is the Old City Council Chambers. Built in the mid-eighteenth century, it differs from most colonial council chambers mainly because it is not located next to the jailhouse and it doesn’t have a belfry.

The porch is a later addition, having been remodeled in 1983, when the wood railings were replaced by wrought iron and the floor was lined with tile. The building housed the City Council Chambers until 1917.
