One of the best bars with live music in São Paulo, award-winning Bar Madeleine has jazz performances every night. The stage shares its red velvet curtains with a large window overlooking Rua Aspicuelta, central to nightlife in the Vila Madalena district - but the bar is five blocks away from its busiest corner.
Designed by Luiz Bessa with salvage materials, Bar Madeleine has four main areas: the lounge by the stage, a mezzanine above it, a back veranda with a view of the neighborhood, and half a dozen tables in the underground wine cellar with brick walls. Candles contribute to a romantic atmosphere.
Chef Ana Soares likes cooking in a clay oven. Her specialty is an oval, small "bistro pizza" with aromatic dough and colorful borders, which comes in several flavors. Besides 70 types of wine and cocktails made by Laércio Silva, the bar serves imported beers such as Edelweiss, Murphy's Stout and Amstel Pulse on coasters with quotes by jazz icons (in Portuguese only).
Jazz lovers are likely to enjoy the Bar Madeleine schedule. The bar has won Best Bar with Live Music awards from local guide Veja SP in 2010-2011. On Thursday nights, there's a session revolving around a Hammond organ and Daniel Daiben's guitar. Fridays bring the upbeat Groofboogaloo. On Saturdays, there's Brazilian pop (MPB) and jazz with Trincheira. Look up the weekly schedule online for featured artists.
