Introduction to Veloso Bar:
Opened in 2005, Veloso Bar in São Paulo casts a nostalgic glance at Brazil bars from the past, notably the Veloso bar in Rio where Vinicius de Morais and Tom Jobim used to see a pretty girl on her way to the beach and had the idea for "The Girl from Ipanema".
Veloso in São Paulo, with only a handful of tables, is decorated with items such as soccer memorabilia and a poster of legendary sambista Noel Rosa. Like the original Veloso (now Garota de Ipanema), the bar is on a corner, facing a quiet square in the largely residential district of Vila Mariana.
Food and Drink at Veloso:
Coxinhas, or chicken croquettes, made with Catupiry cheese, are the most famous food at Veloso. Other croquettes available are shrimp and Catupiry, codfish and beef.
For a fuller meal, choose from specialties such as the escondidinho de carne-seca (sun-dried meat and pumpkin casserole) or the Veloso filet (chicken-fried steak, arugula, diced tomatoes, parmesan, rice and french fries). On Saturdays, there's feijoada which has won an award from local guide Veja São Paulo.
Veloso serves caipirinhas made famous by Souza, considered by many one of the best bartenders in Sampa. There are several intriguing mixes to choose from, such as pineapple and mint, star fruit and basil, cashew and lime or tangerine and ají pepper. You can also stick with something simpler such as red berries, jaboticaba or the traditional lime.
Other drinks served at Veloso are Brahma draft beer, Brazilian cachaça (ask for a specific menu), wine and cocktails.
