One of the classiest books you can get as a Rio de Janeiro souvenir is 200 Anos - Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro 1808-2008, a bilingual (Portuguese-English) and richly illustrated work which commemorates 200 years of the awesome Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden.
The book will be launched at 8 pm on October 16, 2008 at the Ipanema branch of the charming Livraria da Travessa.
The book traces the history of Jardim Botânico, which starts when the Portuguese royal family left Portugal and established the seat of Portuguese reign in Rio de Janeiro in 1808.
After the launching, the book will be found at Livraria da Travessa at the Botanical Garden shop, both of which sell another book dedicated to the Garden: My Beloved Botanic Garden, by the late Brazilian songwriter Tom Jobim (who co-wrote "Garota de Ipanema" with Vinicius de Moraes).
This year's special events at the Botanical Garden, such as the recent opening of the Environment Museum, run parallel with commemorative events for the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Portuguese court.
The book has 200 pages.
