Maresias is famous for attracting a beautiful crowd. But this beach on the São Paulo North Shore has its own savage beauty heightened when it's deserted, like something straight from the beginning of creation.
May, June and August - off-season months during the less rainy season - offer some good chances of catching Maresias deserted, with sunshine. But rain is a North Shore reality year round.
Here, it's a weekday in early August and the distractions are back in school or at work. There's some action in the north end, but the beach is mostly empty as far as the eye can see. The winter surf tournaments are over, and it will be months before MTV sets up camp on these sands for summer hype.
It's warm enough for shorts. The rain has let up for now and there's no lightning. Going to Maresias on a day like this, even in the summer, may also be the only way to enjoy the beach at all during a short trip.
