Where to Stay in Pelourinho

Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

By

Updated on July 30, 2013

Pelourinho is a natural choice for first-time travelers in Salvador. The historic district with strong Afro-Brazilian roots, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (and once the site of a pillory, or pelourinho) draws visitors from the world over, who find plenty of attractions to explore along the neighborhood's cobblestone streets.

Staying in one of the area's hotels means easy access on foot to churches, museums, handicraft stores, capoeira and musical performances in the street and row after row of ancient buildings.

Pelourinho has from boutique hotels and pousadas to hostels; here's a roundup of places to stay in the area.

For charming places to stay in Pelourinho and other neighborhoods, see this guide to best luxury and boutique hotels in Salvador.

Where is Pelourinho?

Pelourinho, or the Historic Center, is a specific area of Salvador contained within a larger region known as Centro Antigo, or Old Center. With an area of 7 square kilometers, Centro Antigo comprises 11 districts: Pelourinho, Centro, Barris, Tororó, Nazaré, Saúde, Barbalho, Macaúbas, part of Liberdade, Santo Antônio and Comércio. All those districts are included in a rehabilitation plan resulting from a collaboration involving Federal, State and Municipal spheres of government in a partnership with UNESCO.

Pelourinho has an area of 0.8 square kilometers, contained between Mosteiro de São Bento and the Santo Antônio Além do Carmo Fort. Pelourinho Cultural, part of Bahia State's Culture Secretariat, has a simplified online map of the historic district; when in Salvador, ask for another map with an attraction guide, available at SATs (Tourist Information Service offices) such as the one at the International Airport or the one in Pelourinho itself (at Terreiro de Jesus between Rua Laranjeiras and Rua João de Deus).

The gods - deuses - in the name of the pousada are the orixás (pronouced o-ri-SHAS), deities in the Candomblé religion. Each of the seven suites is named after one of them and decorated in colors referring to their animistic traits.

In the Xangô suite, red predominate: Xangô is orixá associated with fire. The green evocative of Oxóssi, who rules over forests, sets the tone in the namesake suite (photo).

All the suites have 26-inch LCD-screen TVs, cable, a telephone, a mini refrigerator, A/C, internet access and a digital safe.

Breakfast is served in the rooms; snacks and caipirinhas can be ordered in room service.
