Best Luxury and Boutique Hotels in Salvador, Brazil

By , About.com Guide

11. Aram Yami

Overlooking Baia de Todos os Santos and a close walk from Pelourinho, Aram Yami is a boutique hotel with remarkable ocean views.

Guest rooms are finely appointed with Brazilian and international decorative elements, goose feather pillows, and LCD satellite TVs.

12. Casa do Amarelindo

With only 10 guest rooms and personalized attention to hospitality, Casa do Amarelindo is a 19th-century construction in Salvador's historic district turned into one of the city's most charming places to stay.

The rooftop terrace with a sweeping view of Baia de Todos os Santos is one of many attractions in this French-owned boutique pousada/guesthouse with a multilingual staff. The five-story building with an elevator also has two patios, a restaurant, two bars and a fitness center.

13. Casa da Vitória

A 1960s mansion has become a carefully managed charm pousada. Located in a tranquil residential street near Baia de Todos os Santos, Casa da Vitória has only 7 suites, all with updated comforts such as queen size beds and solar heating.

Attractive details, such as furniture and decorative objects made by local artisans, are everywhere. Nearby attractions include outstanding museums and art galleries.

14. Zank Boutique Hotel

Furniture and art objects carefully picked out in ateliers and antiques shops decorate Zank Boutique Hotel in the Rio Vermelho district. Interior designer Judith Pottecher worked around several themes for the luxurious hotel's 20 suites, spread between a restored mansion and a contemporary annex. In the mansion, the décor is inspired in the Baroque, Colonial and Modernist styles. The hotel is one of the best in town for romantic travel.

A spa, a reading room, an outdoor lounge with a wooden deck overlooking the ocean are some of the great amenities. The hotel's one major drawback is the absence of rooms with universal design. According to a staff member, they will do their best to accommodate guests on wheelchairs and with special needs.

15. A Casa das Portas Velhas

The old doors in the hotel's name refer to salvaged doors which add quaint touches to the décor with a European slant - A Casa das Portas Velhas belongs to Spanish chain Marvel Hoteles, based on the Costa Dorada.

The hotel is located at Largo da Palma in the Nazaré district, part of Historic Downtown Salvador. The largo (square) is named after Palma de Mallorca, as it used to have several residents from that Spanish town.

Cable TV, free internet and non-allergenic pillows are some of the perks in the 15 guest rooms.

16. Hotel Catharina Paraguaçu

Named after a 16th-century indigenous woman of great historic significance in the formation of Brazil identity, Hotel Catharina Paraguaçu has a splendid location in the Rio Vermelho district.

The boutique hotel occupies a 19th-century mansion on a hill with ocean views. It has 32 guest rooms, one of which is wheelchair-accessible.

Historic Downtown Salvador is a short taxi ride away; Rio Vermelho is home to some of Salvador's best restaurants, bars and nightlife and also to one of the city's most important annual festivities: the celebration of Iemanjá, queen of the sea and the waters in the Candomblé religion, on February 2.

17. Solar do Carmo

Charming Solar do Carmo, owned by an Italian-Brazilian couple, has amazing views of Baia de Todos os Santos. Homemade breakfast is served on the terrace with a 180-degree view of the ocean.

From owner Flávia Taiano's studio come the attractive artworks which decorate the walls.

18. Cocoon Hotel & Restaurant

At Cocoon, the space theme is represented in architectural details; the pool, cleaned by a chlorine-free system, might feel nearly as rejuvenating as the one in Ron Howard's eponymous 1985 movie.

The 27-room hotel facing Jaguaribe Beach is not too close to Pelourinho geographically (about 9.5 miles), but its décor includes furniture and decorative objects made from recycled objects by a Pelourinho community. What's best, the pieces are available for purchase.

The Cocoon Restaurant, serving Italian food, a lounge bar and free internet access are other amenities and services.
