Rede Globo, the TV station which detains the rights to broadcasting the Special Group Carnival Parade in Rio de Janeiro, has video samples of sambas-enredo, or the theme songs, for the outstanding samba schools in the 2008 Parade.
Every year, Globo makes studio vinhetas, or vignettes, for each samba school in the Special Group, which includes the most traditional and famous samba schools in Rio de Janeiro. As Carnival approaches, these short videos are shown during commercials in the regular TV programming.
Get ready for your next Carnival by watching these brief videos. They're not top technical quality, but they're fun. Here's how you can find them:
- Go to the Globo Carnaval 2008 website
- In the menu to the left, where it says escolas de samba, choose a samba school in the Rio de Janeiro dropbox. (Unfortunately, São Paulo Carnival videos are not available.)
- Even if there's a play button in the middle of the pop-up screen, click on the play button underneath the screen - it works a little better.
- Be patient - if the video "chokes", click on play again.
- You can view the videos in full screen (button below the bottom right hand corner).
- When the video is over, you can click on ver novamente to watch them again.
