Sorveteria Itália

Doce de leite popsicle from Itália

Patricia Ribeiro

If you have ice cream shops at the top of your must-find list everywhere you go, make sure you visit Sorveteria Itália when you’re in Rio.

The company started with a small shop and one employee in Ipanema. Later, vendors used to sell Itália ice cream on the beach. Today, there are several franchises in Rio.

Sit at their counter, decorated with tile mosaics in the Italian flag colors, and try the famous doce de leite popsicle – a creamy delight sure to please the most demanding sweet tooth.

Itália's tangerine popsicles are also very popular. Ice cream cone flavors include another classic Brazilian dessert: Romeu and Julieta, or a combination of cheese and guava paste.

The shop uses reforested wood for their popsicle sticks. You'll see the words madeira reflorestada on them. If you get the message Vale 1 picolé Itália, that means you got another popsicle for free.
