Due to the fire which destroyed part of Cidade do Samba, the "Forças da Natureza" show has been canceled indefinitely. Grande Rio, Portela and União da Ilha, whose workshops were affected by the fire, will parade hors concours in Carnival 2011.
"Forças da Natureza", or The Powers of Nature, is the Thursday night show at Cidade do Samba, or Samba City, in Rio de Janeiro.
The show is themed around nature, the aggressions which threaten it, and the appeals for a more loving attitude towards the natural world.
Show Songs
Several samba songs which depict Brazil's natural beauty are featured in the show, which visits works by Brazil popular music greats such as Tom Jobim, Ary Barroso, Chico Buarque and Jorge Ben Jor.
The sambas-enredo, or samba school theme songs, chosen for the last segment are all centered around nature.
They get the audience in the mood for the final parade, when artists and audience dance to the samba.
Production Details
The six settings and 141 costumes in "Forças da Natureza" were all made by participants in courses and workshops at Cidade do Samba. Produced by Liesa, the Independent Samba School League, the show features 70 members of samba schools in the Special Group.
The performance starts with "The Mythical Night", presenting a duel between chaos and the forces of good and the origin of life. Next, "Brazilian Exuberance" highlights the country's natural beauty. The beauty of Brazilian women is the focus in the "Dance of Fire". The "Apotheosis" closes the show with the performance of outstanding sambas-enredo.

2011 Show Dates
The show will take place on these Thursdays before and after Carnival 2011 (March 5-8), always at 8 p.m. Ticket offices open at 7 p.m. However, reservations are recommended.
