About Gigantes da Lira:

Gigantes da Lira is one of the best kids' blocos, or Carnival groups, in the Rio de Janeiro Carnival.

Gigantes da Lira, which started in the late 1990s, leaves from a square in the Laranjeiras district on the Saturday before Carnival. Actress Yeda Dantas, in her role as the clown Dr. Giramundo, and her troupe lead Gigantes da Lira, which features circus characters from clowns to people on stilts and acrobats.

The gigante, or giant, in the parade is a huge puppet in the manner of the ones you see in the Olinda Carnival.

Kids will enjoy dressing up and partying with you in this upbeat and safe bloco.

Where Gigante da Lira Parades Start:

A square called Praça Aliança, on Rua General Glicério, Laranjeiras, Rio de Janeiro.

The bloco parades on Rua General Glicério, then on Rua General Cristóvão Barcellos, making a loop back to the starting point.

When:

The Saturday before Carnival Saturday, at 5pm.
