Lumiar, one of the rural districts of Nova Friburgo, is home to one of the best mountain hotels in Rio de Janeiro State.
Parador Lumiar, largely unaffected by the rains which ravaged Nova Friburgo in early 2011, is ensconced in a valley at an altitude of 850 meters (about 2, 788 feet).
Landscaping by Jussara Cabral (with Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden experience) complements the natural beauty of the Fluminense Range's soft contours. The hotel's 13 bungalows, placed around a lake, are surrounded by bromeliads, orchids, and other flowers.
One of the main attractions on the 108-plus-acre property is a waterfall by which there's a dry sauna. There are jeep tours, horseback riding tours and, for the fit adventure travel aficionado, hiking tours lasting up to five hours. The owners, Marielza and Marcelo Fontes, are closely involved in management. Marielza's herb garden provides fresh ingredients for the guests' tea and lemon grass for sauna aromas.
