Casarão de Minas Overview:
Casarão de Minas, a vintage two-story house ("casarão") located behind the urban bus terminal in Nova Friburgo, is a mix of food market and bar.
Owned by a couple - the husband being from Minas Gerais - the place is full of character, with its preserved wooden counters and shelving, worn-out ceramic floors, and a vintage cash register.
During the day, you can shop for herbs, crackers, homemade jelly, authentic Minas cheese and delicious doce de leite by the chunk (R$ 6,90 the kilo).
Casarão de Minas at Night:
After sunset, the old house becomes a bar (but you can still shop for food until 10pm). The small mezzanine over the counter and a small dining area in the back serve a variety of appetizers to go with some carefully chosen cachaça brands, such as Nega Fulô, locally produced at the Soledade Farm (www.fazendasoledade.com.br) since 1977.
Correction: Cachaça has been produced at Fazenda Soledade since 1977, and not since the 19th century as it was published before.
Tue-Sat 9 a.m. - 10 p.m.; bar opens Tue-Sat 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. or later, depending on the customers.
