Fenaostra, or the National Oyster and Azorean Culture Festival, takes place every October in Florianópolis.
Santa Catarina is home to over 90% of Brazil's oyster production, and Florianópolis is one of the top production centers. During Fenaostra, visitors get to sample some of the best oysters on the island, enjoy music concerts, and shop for local handicrafts.
Traditional bobbin lace is one of the top Azorean heritage attractions in the festival. Brought to the area by Azorean immigrants in the 18th century, bobbin lace is a signature Florianópolis art, made and sold year round particulary on Avenida das Rendeiras, or the Lacemaker Avenue by Lagoa da Conceição, the island's largest lagoon.
Fenaostra is also a trade show and a scientific gathering attended by specialists in oyster farming.
