Casa Histórica de Osório
One of the Oldest Houses in Rio de Janeiro is Completely Renovated

From Débora Birn , for About.com

Nov.17, 2008

In Central Rio, one of the newest attractions for history lovers is Casa Histórica de Osório, a building listed by IPHAN (the Brazilian Institute for National Historic and Artistic Heritage). It now houses the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy.

The building, which dates back to the end of the 18th century, is one of the oldest residential properties in Rio – perhaps the oldest - and was recently restored from top to bottom. It belonged to Marshall Osório, Patron of the Brazilian Army and War Ministry during the rule of Emperor D. Pedro II.

There are no English guides, but visitors are welcome. The door remains closed; ring the doorbell.
