Fazenda Mulungu Vermelho

By Patricia Ribeiro, About.com

Fazenda Mulungu Vermelho Overview:

Fazenda Mulungu Vermelho in Vassouras, less than 80 miles from Rio de Janeiro, helps tell the story of the Coffee Cycle in the Paraíba River Valley.

The farmhouse built in 1830, one of the earliest in the region, is a member of Preservale, an organization which aims to preserve Paraíba River Valley heritage, and of Fazendas do Brasil.

Named for the spectacular mulungu (Erythrina verna), the farm once belonged to Captain Antônio Luiz dos Santos. His wife, Dona Luíza Angélica, was the daughter of Captain Inácio de Souza Werneck, the patriarch of the most important clan in the Paraíba River Valley Coffee Cycle.

Visits :

Visitors can spend the day with optional snacks, lunch or dinner (cooked on a wood stove). Or they can stay in one of three suites with full meals included in the fare.

Day visits must be previously scheduled and they're open both to individuals and groups.

Besides touring the farmhouse, decorated with antiques, day guests can also enjoy some of the property's attractions, including a lake, trails and a peacock farm.
