Fazenda São Fernando, in Vassouras, is one of the historic coffee farms in the Paraíba River Valley which can be visited for the day.
The stunning farmhouse, built over three different periods of the 19th century, was carefully restored with the support of information from archaeological digs.
Once the property of Fernando Luiz dos Santos Werneck, a member of the Coffee Cycle's most powerful clan, Fazenda São Fernando went through the expansion, apogee and decadence of the Paraíba River Valley Coffee Cycle.
The farm is a member of Preservale and of Fazendas do Brasil.
The farm is a productive center dedicated to dairy cattle, organic agriculture and reforestation.
Guided tours (under appointment only) focus on a visit to the farmhouse - where you'll find modern and contemporary works of art as well as antiques - and to the ruins of the slave quarters.
You'll also see the area where coffee was dried and enjoy coffee and snacks in the kitchen.
