Of the 12 rooms, seven have the verandas facing the Bay of Todos os Santos. The other rooms face the historic district and have those tiny balconies wrapped in wrought iron so dear to old Brazilian houses.
Apartments are spacious and decorated with cheerful colors. Tall French doors which let in the breeze, wooden and tile floors, and air conditioning - a comfort residents of long ago would probably have enjoyed - help tame the Salvador heat.
Do you absolutely need a pool? That's one thing you won't find at Pousada do Pilar. But you'll enjoy the large terrace with a sea view where the inn's generous breakfast is served.
Just as outstanding as the terrace is the hydraulic elevator at Pousada do Pilar, an absolute rarity in the area - and in renovated Brazilian vintage homes, for that matter.
