Fazenda Sanjo

By Patricia Ribeiro, About.com

Fazenda Sanjo:

Fazenda Sanjo is one of the best ranches travelers can visit on Marajó Island.

Located 35 kilometers (about 21 miles) northwest of Soure, the town where you will dock after a 3 1/2-hour ferry ride from Belém, Fazenda Sanjo offers the top experiences of rural tourism in Marajó: vast expanses, awesome bird watching, casual accommodations, plentiful ranch food, horse riding and the chance to help marajoara cowboys round up buffalo.

The ranch, which has been owned by the Acatauassu Nunes family for several generations, is located on the São Sebastião River, an affluent of the Paracauary (see map).

The ranch is open year round. During the dry season (roughly May-November), you'll see an astounding variety of birds, the stars of Marajó wildlife. Prepare your eyes and camera for scarlet ibis, roseate spoonbills, hawks, and parakeets.

One of the interesting features of Fazenda Sanjo is the family-owned archaeology and history museum with marajoara artifacts and old cowboy items.

How to Get to Fazenda Sanjo:

Ana Teresa and Carlos, owners of Fazenda Sanjo, will arrange all the details of your trip go the ranch. Upon arrival at Soure, you will be taken over three rivers in a voadeira, ("flyer", or motor boat) to the margins of the São Sebastião (the trip takes approximately an hour).

Riders will be waiting with strong marajoara horses - the only ones which can traverse Marajó mud - or tame buffalo. There are also buffalo-pulled carts.

When you make reservations, you can also request assistance with the ferry tickets from and to Belém.

Accommodations:

Fazenda Sanjo has two suites with a two beds each (1 double, 1 single) and a bathroom. The four other rooms share three bathrooms.

Each room has at least one double and one single bed. The largest room has one double and three single beds.

Ask about discounts for children.
