Guide Review - Pousada do Ó Review

Fancier accommodations or lower prices can be found elsewhere in Tiradentes, but it's definitely a plus to wake up in a converted historical home on the initial stretch of the slope leading up to the magnificent Church of Santo Antônio, at the very heart of downtown Tiradentes.

Rooms 7 (double occupancy) and 1 (with one double bed and one single bed) are the best. Like in many other Brazilian inns, each room has a fan and good, thick blankets, but no A/C or heater. That is usually fine in Minas Gerais, especially with the insulation from the thick colonial walls.

Owned by a friendly young couple, the inn is a restful place to come back to after long walks up and down the slab-paved Tiradentes streets.

  • Steam Train to Sao João Del Rey: Walk less than a mile to the train station.
  • Light & Sound Show (narrated in Portuguese): A 16-minute recorded tour, on weekend evenings at the Church of Santo Antônio.
  • Arts and crafts shops: Walk all over historical downtown, especially Rua Direita, and browse away.
  • Church of São Francisco de Paula: Go down the street, cross the bridge and walk to the hill atop which is the church. Photograph the city at your feet and, on Saturdays, enjoy the traditional Musical Evenings.
  • Padre Toledo Museum: One long block east of the Church of Santo Antônio.

Budget Food Tips:

  • There are a few very affordable eateries around the big square called Largo das Forras, five blocks east on Rua Direita.
  • Join the locals in buying typical Minas Gerais cheese rolls (pão de queijo), perhaps hot from the oven, at the small bakery on the third corner of Rua Direita east from Largo do Ó. The bakery also sells many kinds of huge pastries for very low prices.
