Pantanal de Poconé
Ecotourism and pantaneira activities such as horseback riding, jeep and photo tours, canoe rides, trekking, and night tours with focagem de jacarés (nighttime alligator spotlighting) are the things to do around Poconé (pop. 31.1180), which has some of the best riverside and farm hotels, ecolodges and fishing hotels in northern Pantanal.
Poconé, Cáceres and Barâo de Melgaço are the three main gateways to northern Pantanal which can be reached by boat, plane or roads from Cuiabá, capital of the state of Mato Grosso. The subdivisions of Pantanal surrounding the three cities are commonly known as Pantanal de Poconé, Pantanal de Cáceres and Pantanal de Barâo de Melgaço.
The Transpantaneira road links Poconé to Porto Jofre, 149 kilometers to the south on the Cuiabá River. Porto Jofre is the gateway to Pantanal Mato-Grossense National Park.
