Copacabana hostels are, of course, a great student travel lodging option. But double rooms or private rooms at Copacabana hostels - for a fraction of the price charged by a regular hotel - also come in handy for older travelers with a young, down-to-earth attitude.
Consider, for example, the off-season price (August 2008) for a private room with a private bath at Castelo Bed & Breakfast, which occupies an adapted vintage home: $40 with breakfast, something unheard of at Copacabana hotels.
Early planning is essential for Reveillon or New Year's Eve in Copacabana, the most popular event of its kind in Brazil. Start looking for Reveillon packages at Copacabana hostels between late July and mid-August, when rates should be out and there is still room available. The same goes for Carnival and summer rates in general - when it comes to hostels, the earlier the better.
Some Copacabana hostels are located in adapted houses on quieter streets, while others will place you on busy commercial avenues. Ask staff about noise levels before you book.
