How to Get to Marajó Island
Belém-Marajó Travel Information

By Patricia Ribeiro, About.com

Ilha do Marajó, in Pará, is one of the top attractions of any trip to Belém, the state capital.

You can travel between Belém and Marajó by boat, ferryboat or plane.

The information in this guide is provided by Paratur, the Pará Travel Bureau. Check schedules beforehand for possible changes and buy tickets at least three days in advance.

July is the area's busiest travel period, and Belém's most important holiday is Círio de Nazaré. Also expect greater river traffic during the Parintins Festival.

Belém-Marajó by Boat

The boat trip to Marajó lasts between three and four hours.

Boats to Soure and Salvaterra, two of the main Marajó towns, leave from the historic and newly restored Armazém 10, or Warehouse 10 of Terminal Hidroviário, or the Boat Terminal, at the Belém Docks.

About 1,800 people transit Terminal Hidroviário daily. The terminal is also the departure point for boat trips to Manaus.

Once you arrive at Marajó, you can take a ten-minute boat ride between Soure and Salvaterra, which are just across from each other on the Paracauari River.
