Pitombeira dos Quatro Cantos is one of Olinda's most popular troças, or Carnival groups. They are the early birds of the city's prévias, or pre-Carnival festivities, traditionally kicking off the season with a rehearsal and a street party on September 7, Brazil's Independence Day.Frevo, played by a brass band with veteran and young players, is the signature music of the group founded in 1947. The parades and rehearsals also feature the official banner, richly embroidered with arabesques and a representation of Olinda streets, giant puppets, costumes and passistas, skilled dancers in colorful attire doing frevo steps.
The name of the group comes from the pitombeira (Talisia esculenta) branches carried by the founders, a group of young men, in their first parades. They lived on Rua do Amparo and in the Quatro Cantos area.
Pitombeira dos Quatro Cantos has its headquarters in Historic Downtown Olinda. Their pre-Carnival and Carnival activities involve rehearsal parties at the headquarters and parades in the streets of the historic district.
