One of the top destinations on Bahia's Cocoa Coast, Ilhéus is stepping up into a new phase in its tourism thanks to the revitalization of cocoa production (ravaged by witch's broom in the late 1980s), highlighted in the annual Chocolate Festival, and the shaping up of a Chocolate Route.
Jardim Atlântico Beach Resort, on a long and wide beach with calm waters known as Milionários - "Millionaires", for cocoa barons who used to frequent it in the olden days - is a mid-priced base from which to explore the Cocoa Coast.
The hotel is just about 4 miles from the town center and less than 2 miles from the Ilhéus airport. Its entrance is on an urban stretch of the Ilhéus – Olivença road which doubles as a not particularly attractive main street for the Jardim Atlântico district.
On the other hand, there is a small and busy commercial district a few blocks from the hotel (it's possible to walk there via a service road instead of the main, single-lane road with no shoulders).
Indoor common areas are decorated with some beautiful drawings (and a prominent photo of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who visited during one of his terms). Note the ceramic tiles with the guest room numbers and drawings of animals and other themes. Hotel staff confirmed that they are the work of Reinaldo Eckenberger, an Argentine artist who has lived in Bahia since the 1940s.
On New Year's Eve, the Jardim Atlântico hosts a big celebration with an all-inclusive menu and DJs.
