Roosters wake up early, and in the case of Galo da Madrugada ("Rooster of Dawn"), Recife's famous and enormous Carnival bloco, that means months before the Carnival Saturday parade (March 1). If you're going to be in Recife in the next month or so, you might be able to enjoy Quinta no Galo ("Thrusday at Galo") and Saturday rehearsals at the bloco's headquarters. Mini affairs compared to the record-breaking parade, the indoor parties are vibrant samples of the event which fills miles of streets and bridges.
The Saturday prévias (as pre-Carnival celebrations are known in Pernambuco) feature Bloco das Ilusőes, a bloco lírico founded in 1985 by Maria do Carmo ("Carminha") Travassos Freire (1927-2010), wife of Galo da Madrugada founder Enéas Freire (1921-2008). Tomorrow, besides Bloco das Ilusőes - which is now directed by Ana Nery, wife of Galo's president Rômulo Meneses - singer and host André Rio will receive guest artists Getúlio Cavalcanti, Carla Rio, Maestro Forró e a Orquestra Popular da Bomba do Hemetério, Luciano Magno, Nena Queiroga, Nádia Maia, Benil and Batuque Movido a Samba.
