Frevo, a unique form of Brazilian artistic expression, has been inscribed in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (read the official note).

Recognized as cultural heritage in Brazil by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) since 2007, frevo takes over the streets of Recife and Olinda - and is top hits are played in myriad celebrations in other cities - during Brazilian Carnival.

The City of Recife threw a great party at Pátio de São Pedro yesterday to commemorate the UNESCO listing.

The best-known frevo hit is "Vassourinhas" ("Little Brooms"), by M. Costa - enjoy it performed live by Recife-based Spok Frevo Orquestra in this YouTube video.
