Unidos da Tijuca, grand winners of Rio Carnival 2013 and Carnival 2010, are getting ready for their 2013 Special group parade with rehearsals in their headquarters every Saturday through Carnival. Tonight, the samba school is having a crowning party for their Rainha de Bateria, or queen of the percussion section.
Juliana Alves, who was in the rehearsal last Saturday (photo), will be dancing along the Sambódromo (Rio's Carnival walkway) with the band directed by mestre Casagrande on Carnival Sunday, Feb.10, 2013 - and perhaps in the Champions' Parade the following Saturday.
The mestre-sala and porta-bandeira (MC and flag bearer); the Velha Guarda (Old Timers); dancers and baianas - women dressed in costumes which evoke traditional Bahia dress - will be there tonight, as well as a DJ on the alternative dance floor starting at 1 a.m.
The Unidos da Tijuca theme this Carnival is Germany, in celebration of the Year of Germany in Brazil.
Party with the reigning champions and their new queen at Avenida Francisco Bicalho 47, in the Leopoldina district. Tickets cost R$ 10; admission for women is free until midnight. For more information, call 21-2263-9679 or 2516-2749.
