Recife's most famous Carnival Parade - Galo da Madrugada, or the Rooster of Dawn - will once again take to the streets on Carnival Saturday 2013 (Feb.9). However, you don't need to wait till February to have a good time at their headquarters.
Galo da Madrugada is a busy organization; for example, for the last three years they've produced Forrozão do Galo, a St. John's open-air party in June. Palácio Enéas Freire, the bloco's attractive headquarters in the São José district, hosts many events throughout the year, the best of which is Quinta no Galo (Thursday at Galo) featuring great music every week.
Also, look up other prévias, as pre-Carnival parties are known in Pernambuco, such as the 2013 Carnival CD launch party on Dec.6 and the theme frevo finals on Jan.10, 2013.
Recife Carnival, among the very best in Brazil, will commemorate musician Naná Vasconcelos and photographer Alcir Lacerda (in memorian) in 2013. Look for more news in the official Recife Carnival guide, which should be updated soon.
