Samba and feijoada make a yummy all-Brazilian combo and at this time of the year, you can come and get it at samba schools.
In Rio de Janeiro, Mangueira has posted heads-up for the monthly feijoada at Palácio do Samba, their humongous headquarters. (On a busy night, expect to share the Samba Palace with 9,999 other partygoers - thank goodness for the retractable roof and the powerful misting fans!)
The next feijoada will be on Sep.11, at 1 p.m. The Nov.13 feijoada will feature a tribute to the great musician Nelson Cavaquinho (1911-1986), who is the samba school's theme for the 2011 Special Group parade.
Besides the feijoada, the samba school is also choosing its 2011 theme samba. Playoffs continue tomorrow at 11 p.m. The six sambas competing at this stage will be sung by Luizito, Rychahs and Zé Paulo, known as Mangueira's Three Tenors. The final will be on Oct.9 at 11 p.m., at Palácio do Samba.
Another exciting event happening at the samba school is their Boteco Mangueira, which, as the name says, evokes the casual atmosphere of samba played at a bar, among friends, perhaps with somebody keeping the rhythm on a box of matches. Mangueira, whose history (since the 1920s) is intertwined with the very history of samba in Rio, is paying homage to its legendary sambistas in these get-togethers. The one coming up on Sep.15 will be a tribute to Padeirinho da Mangueira (1927-1987) and Darcy da Mangueira (1932-2008). Tickets cost just R$5 (less than $3!)
Keep an eye on the Mangueira schedule for upcoming events and remember that dates are posted Brazil style, with the day first. Tickets have usually been paid in cash only.
