Kilo restaurants are the frugal Brazil traveler's best friends. If you're planning a visit to Brazil on a tight budget, get ready to gather round the colorful, home style buffet with the locals and stretch your travel cash with flavor!
As part of my current love-it-more-than-ever affair with Lagoa da Conceição, I want to share this tip about the Via Lagoa Shopping, the small shopping center at Centrinho da Lagoa. That's the lagoon's busy and laidback shopping/nightlife district. There are a few kilo restaurants in the shopping center, one of them Restaurante de Minas (phone 48-3334-0430), where the dish above (watercress salad, brown rice, fried dumpling, fried fish, veggies and taboulleh) weighed in at $2.
For big appetites, the restaurant, which brings a Minas Gerais culinary slant to island life, also has prato livre ("free plate"), or all-you-can-eat-in-two-servings, for about $6. But if you waste food, the waste is charged by the kilo, which is only fair. Long live Floripa's frugal havens!
