Free Walking Tours of Central Rio de Janeiro

Historic Downtown Rio de Janeiro (Centro Histórico) is packed with architectural and cultural treasures such as Palácio Tiradentes, and you can discover them with a group. The Geography Institute at UERJ -- Rio de Janeiro State University -- has free guided walking tours of historic downtown Rio on occasion and by appointment only.

Last August, they even hosted a walking tour of Centro Histórico by night, with the theme revolving around Rio lighting itself.
