A Celebration of Afro-Brazilian Heritage

Thursday November 20, 2008

Many events took place in Brazil today to commemmorate Black Awareness Day. An important benchmark was an earlier Brazil launching of the worldwide 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign, in order to call attention to the double violence suffered by black women in Brazil due to gender and race, be it through discrimination or exclusion.

A celebration of Afro-Brazilian heritage goes on year round at two outstanding museums I invite you to read about today. When you travel in Brazil, immerse yourself in the power and beauty of the Afro-Brazilian Museum, in Salvador, and the Afro-Brazil Museum, in São Paulo.

Also, visit my forum post about Quilombo, a district of São Bento do Sapucaí (SP) where descendants of a 19th-century slave community pass the torch through their art and customs.
